Everything you ever wanted to know about Feral Hog Traps.

FYI- The information found on this page has been supplied by Younger Bros. "South Texas Hunting and Trapping Equipment". Younger Bros. is a manufacturer of high quality outdoor hunting and trapping equipment and produces a line of high quality Hog Traps and Portable Hog Trap Panel systems which are currently in use by County and State Government Feral Hog management programs across the United States as well as Federal Government Disease Control Programs and includes sales to Farmers, Ranchers, Private Landowners and Professional Trappers.

Welcome to Younger Bros. Feral Hog Traps Page. This page has been designed to give anyone interested in Trapping Feral Hogs an idea how different model Feral Hog Traps work and aid in helping Trappers decide which Trap is best for their particular trapping program. We will also rate the the traps from 1 to 5 (5 being the best) for ease of use, trapping results and function.

Continuous Catch Trap: The term "Continuous Catch Trap" is very often misunderstood. In order for traps to allow catching Hogs after the door has been tripped requires pre-baiting with the door held in the open position for a period of time to condition the Hogs to entering and eating from the trap. On occasion but very rare Hogs will enter "Continuous Catch Traps" to get at a food source without pre-baiting.

I cannot stress enough, purchase a trap from a reputable manufacturer. Why? Most Hog Traps look the same and for the most part anyone with a welding machine and a little skill can build a cage and call it a Hog Trap. Unfortunately most people find out they didn't get a great deal until after it's too late. There's much more to a Hog Trap than wire mesh and steel. The Hog Traps Door and how it's engineered and functions is the single most important component of any Feral Hog Trap. A poorly designed Door and trip mechanism can be the difference between trapping no Feral Hogs and having a trap that produces results. Shop wisely and don't purchase a trap just because the price is right.

Push Thru Hog Trap

Rating:  ( 1 )

The Push Thru Hog Trap requires the most time, effort and expense to achieve a successful trapping program often times with disappointing results. This Trap however is ideal for trapping where the General Public may come into contact with the Trap or where Deer populations are high as Deer will not push thru to enter. This model Trap requires Hogs to use their snout and head to root/ push the door open to enter the trap. As the Hog enters the trap the bottom of the door glides along the Hogs back often times causing the Hog to back out of the trap before the traps doors close. The sliding of the doors along the Hogs back is not natural to the Feral Hog as in most cases Feral Hogs will go around objects such as tree limbs and fences "if" an easier path can be found, Hogs will search out the least path of resistance. Every Hog that enters the trap must push thru the doors and limited trapping results as opposed to trip wire traps that start out with the door in the open position.

Trap Use:

The Push Thru Hog Trap requires pre-baiting and basically training the Hogs to enter the Trap over several days or weeks which can be very expensive and time consuming. Pre-baiting requires the doors to be held in the open position until evidence of Hogs entering the trap can be seen. Once Hogs are entering the Trap for the bait the doors are placed in the closed position. Once a Hog or Hogs have been trapped the pre-baiting process starts all over again. In testing we have never had a Hog enter the trap without first pre-baiting with the doors in the open position.

Spring Loaded Side Swing Door

Hog Trap with Spring Loaded Side Swing Door

Rating: ( 5 )

The Spring Loaded Side Swing Door Trap is user friendly and produces excellent results. The main advantage to this trap is that it does not require expensive and time consuming pre-baiting. The trap door is held open allowing Hogs to freely enter without having to contact any components of the trap. Hogs entering the trap work their way to the back of the trap where a trip line is triggered closing the door on Hogs that have entered the trap often times resulting in multiple Hogs being trapped. Even after the door has been tripped Hogs can still enter the trap by pushing their way thru the door.

Trap Use:

The Spring Loaded Side Swing Door does not require pre-baiting allowing hogs to be captured the first time they enter the trap. The trap door is held open by a trip wire located in back portion of the trap. Bait is placed trailing into the trap with a larger concentration being placed behind the trip wire. Once the target animal trips the wire the door slams shut.

Guillotine Door Hog Trap

Guillotine Door Hog Trap. Guillotine Door Hog Trap shown with easy set Door Trigger

Rating:  ( 4 )

The Guillotine Hog Trap is designed for professional use where problem animals require being removed for safety reasons or where property damage is occurring. The Guillotine Hog Trap will capture only the animal or animals that have entered the trap and will not allow additional animals to enter the trap as the door locks shut after being tripped. Due to the Traps large door opening getting Hogs to enter the trap is less threatening as the Hogs do not confined. Guillotine Hog Traps require the user to be especially careful when operating due to moving components.

Trap Use:

Pre-baiting is not required. Once Trap Door has been set and the bait has been placed in the trap no further action is required from the user. Guillotine Door Traps should never be used where children or small domestic animals may come into contact with it.

Trip Wire Drop Door Hog Trap

Rating:  ( 3 )

The Trip Wire Drop Hog Trap is a very user friendly Hog Trap. Trap Door is released via a trip wire system located in the back portion of the trap. Door is tripped when target animal pushes against the trip line. Hogs can still enter the trap even after the trap door have been shut.

Trap Use:

Pre-baiting is not required. Once Trap Door has been set and the bait has been placed in the trap no further action is required from the user.

Hog Trap Fronts

Side Swing Door Hog Trap Front

Hog Trap Panel System designed ffor easy set-up and quick take down. Continuous trapping feature allows hogs to enter even after the trap door has been sprung.

The Hog Trap Pen System is by far the best trap system to use for catching larger numbers of  Hogs at one time. Pens can be built in any diameter or shape and best of all the panels are easily taken down and moved making this system truly portable.

Guillotine Hog Trap Front

Guillotine Hog Trap Front with Trap Door Lock Pin, Sliding Guillotine Door, Door Safety lock Pin, Positive trigger release system

The Guillotine Trap Front is designed primarily for trapping problem Hogs that are extremely hard to trap. The wide open door aids in getting hogs that are somewhat trap shy to enter. Once the door closes no other Hogs can enter the trap and opening the door from inside the trap is impossible due to a spring loaded stop that prevents the door from opening. Guillotine traps should never be used by children as these trap systems if used improperly can cause severe injury or even death from the force of the dropping door.
